Don’t panic! Take these steps to save your laptop!

Can you be a bit clumsy and are you likely to knock something over? Chances are you’ve spilled a drink over your laptop – or you are bound to do so in the future. The scare is a pretty big one and you’re usually not sure what to do in this situation.

A quick search on the internet to find out what you should do? It’s too late for that…

Four steps
Perhaps your first reaction is to get angry, throw a few curse words at the blasted device, and pour the spilled drink off the laptop as quickly as possible. The damage has already been done, though. If you leave the device for what it is, you probably won’t be able to save it. Luckily, we’ve got four steps for you to follow that will make it possible to bring your laptop back to life.

  1. Turn off: The first thing you should do is turn off the computer. If you leave it on for too long there’s a considerable chance it’ll short circuit. The fastest way is to press the on/off button for a couple of seconds.
  2. Remove cables: Pull all of the cables out of the device. The power cable, the mouse and other external cables; take them all out.
  3. Dry: Leave your laptop to dry properly. Use a cloth to wipe away all of the water. Open the computer to about a 30 degree angle and then place it on its side so all of the water can run out of the laptop and the keyboard. Important: do not use the device while it’s still drying.
  4. Patience: Now, it’s all about having patience. The best thing to do is to leave the laptop to dry for a couple of days. Can’t wait that long? Then at least leave it to dry for one day. You’ll be quite lucky if your laptop will still work after this, but there’s a considerable chance that the insides are damaged anyway. That’s why you should back up all of your files straight away if you manage to turn on your laptop. It’s possible that your laptop will work properly for a couple of days after turning it back on, but will still give out later.
